England’s best-known and most popular national park is a postcard landscape of shimmering lakes, craggy hilltops and ancient forests that has enchanted outdoor enthusiasts as well as poets and painters since the late 18th century. Windermere, in the heart of the Lake District, is England’s largest lake. Windermere is also the name of a small town, which lies just over a mile from the lake shore. At the northern end of Windermere is the popular market town of Ambleside. About 6 miles south-west of Windermere is Coniston Water and the town of Coniston. Coniston Water is located in the centre of the Lake District National Park under the gaze of Coniston Old Man, popular with fell walkers. Coniston Water's Peel Island was featured in Arthur Ransome's famous book, Swallows and Amazons.
Windermere, Ambleside, Coniston and the surrounding area is arguably the most famous and popular area in the whole of the Lake District. With easy access to Grasmere and Keswick, an unrivalled range of water sports, walks, climbs, cycling and much more, this area is very popular with both leisure visitors wanting a break and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a challenge.
Accommodation - Hostel
Brathay Estate with 369 acres in which to think, explore and develop, makes every brathay residential magical. Brathay Hall, a historic Georgian mansion nestled near the town of Ambleside, is surrounded by private woodlands on the northern shore of lake Windermere. The setting couldn’t be better, with access to communal areas within the grounds, including the private boathouse and private shoreline by the lake. There are a multitude of outdoor adventure activities on site, and everything is within stone-throwing distance of the accommodation lodges, each with its own kitchen, dining, lounges, bedrooms and bathrooms. The centre is exclusively hired by MFA and the facilities will only be used by us.
